What it's like to work with me

I was once working with a client who was feeling unmotivated at work. In our session, we got to talking about a time when she remembered feeling fully alive. Her body immediately came to life, telling stories of the impact she had on her community and the people around her. Her hands were waving, her eyes were sparkling - this was who she truly was, and as a coach, it was an honour to witness.

As we began to discuss how she could find that energy in her current role, she almost immediately deflated. She started listing off tasks and projects she could take on, but it was clear she was doing mental gymnastics to try and make her current situation fit with who she knew she was deep down.

I don’t buy it, I said to her. Sure, she could take on new and different projects (she was highly capable and would be successful at whatever she put her mind to), but this didn’t seem to be about that. This was about a misalignment between who she was – what made her come alive – and the work environment she was currently in. Two months later, she had resigned from her job and applied to school to become a therapist. For her, the turning point was hearing reflected back to her what she already knew deep down. What came next would be challenging, but she knew it was right.

To me, this is what the coaching relationship is about. Giving you space to explore who you are and what makes you come alive, reflecting that back to you, and working with you to take action in whatever direction is right for you.
